Most people considering the Px8’s will probably have looked at the Px7 S2’s. So we compared these head to head to see what you’re really getting in terms of acoustic performance when you step up to the Px8’s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n  \u003ch2 class=\"subhead margin\"\u003ePx8 Sound Quality\u003c\/h2\u003e\n    \n    \u003cp\u003eWhen you look at both headphones, you’ll see that they both can handle the same codecs, deliver the same frequency range, and we really thought B\u0026amp;W had nailed the Px7 S2’s with the angled drive units that better direct sound into your ears so we were happy to see them once again in the Px8’s. They even both look almost identical! So what’s the biggest difference besides the luxury look? \u003cstrong\u003eIt’s all in the carbon dome dynamic drivers!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we found out they were switching the bio-celluose driver to a carbon cone driver, we couldn’t wait to put them to the test. \u003cstrong\u003eWith a more rigid and stiff driver made from carbon, we tested some music out to see how they responded to those quick transient attacks from from different instruments.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\u003cp\u003eI used the Bowers \u0026amp; Wilkins app and connected to my iPhone 14 via Bluetooth and then logged into my Qobuz account directly in the app. I really love the layout of the app and the way it allows you to access all of your music streaming services all within one app. It also has all the EQ settings, devices to connect to, and environment controls all on one screen. I was able to switch from the Px7 S2, a Zeppelin, and the Px8’s with ease.\u003c\/p\u003e \n    \n\u003cp\u003eThe first track I tried out was Vibin Out by FKJ on their French Kiwi Juice album from 2017. This is an awesome track that, with the right set of headphones, can easily take you into another world and let you really kick back and enjoy the music. Right away, the synth fills the entire soundstage and the vocals have incredible detail. I really enjoyed listening to this song with the Px8’s. At about 1:15 into the song, the drums come in and have some really snappy snare hits between the thumps of the bass. This is where I noticed the most difference between the two headphones. With the Px8’s, these snare hits seemed quicker, more powerful, and effortless than the Px7 S2’s. \u003cstrong\u003eIt is definitely something you have to listen for to really notice but if you’re going for a more audiophile grade headphone, you will definitely appreciate this subtle upgrade.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e    \n    \n\u003cp\u003eI also tested each environment mode between and microphone the Px7 S2 and Px8 and they both performed very similarly. I will give a very slight edge in the noise canceling department to the Px8 simply because I thought the Nappa leather creating a little tighter and more natural seal around my ear. I found the adaptive noise canceling to be very natural on both headphones without being too overpowering but still able to cancel out most of the low end car humming noises or background talking in a cafe when I needed to focus. If you know this song, you know it has some great bass that really fills in the background of the song. \u003cstrong\u003eI was listening for not only how hard it would hit but also how well controlled and precise the big bass hits were.\u003c\/strong\u003e At about 3:25 the tempo picks up and the bass guitar plays a great riff in the background of the rest of the instruments. I was pretty incredible just how well the Px8’s retrieved the subtle details from his bass guitar and handled it with such finesse and precision. It just makes this song so much fun to listen to with it’s broad presentation of lower frequencies especially when you have a lot of natural instruments playing all at once. \u003cstrong\u003eAgain, when compared to the Px7 S2’s, the Px8 still has the slight advantage, feeling just a bit more resolute and precise in their timing.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e \n\n\n\u003cp\u003eOverall, we were very impressed by how well the Px8 canceled out high-frequency sounds too. The S2 weighs less than 11 ounces, which is slightly over half a pound. When at work or on a long flight, every little bit of weight counts, however, after about 30 minutes of wearing them, pressure on top of the head was very evenly distributed around the ears, which helped reduce pressure points.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe S2 features upgraded pressure-relieving memory foam that covers plenty of surface area around the ears with thicker, extra soft padding in the ear cushions and soft padding in the headband. The first one is how the wireless system communicates with your network. The next is how two speakers acting as a stereo pair in the same room stay in sync with each other. Normal speakers do not have to worry about this, but wireless speakers do and our brain has a much harder time telling us there is beautiful music in front of us when things are not synced up. In testing all of the competition, Bowers \u0026amp; Wilkins discovered this was a big area for improvement. The final one is keeping all of the speakers in your entire house in sync. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter almost two years of R\u0026amp;D and 70 patents later, Bowers \u0026amp; Wilkins came up with a unique system to address all three of these critical aspects of wireless music systems. \u003cstrong\u003eBasically, every Formation piece has three different antenna systems. They have a proprietary mesh network that ties all of the Formation products together so it is no relying on your home WiFi for music.\u003c\/strong\u003e Control is through WiFi, but the music passes through its own system. A 4” woven glass fiber cone bass\/midrange driver covers the critical midrange and bass frequencies. Each driver has its own 50-watt power amp with digital signal processing to get the most out of each driver.\u003c\/strong\u003e There are no passive crossover components like a typical home speaker with the crossover to each driver taking place in the digital domain, then routing the signal to the individual amp for each speaker driver. This type of design is used in most good powered speakers and does allow the designer to squeeze a whole lot more performance out of the speakers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlex, as the name implies, also gives you many flexible use options. \u003cstrong\u003eObviously, it can be used all by itself. In addition, you can assign one as left and one right for a stereo pair. You can also use a pair of them as rear speakers with the Formation Bar (their soundbar). It sounded far larger than it’s size! \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe then put it in a position where we could walk around from all sides and were very impressed with the dispersion of the tweeter. While you get a little bit of high-frequency roll-off as you get way off-axis, its much less than most conventional speakers. This means the little Flex will give you detailed sound in just about any spot in the room its placed in. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVoices are very clear and the top end is super open and extended. \u003cstrong\u003eThis little guy sounds like a decent home speaker.\u003c\/strong\u003e The bottom end is what is the most impressive though. \u003cstrong\u003eMost speakers with this kind of footprint have bass, but it is more of the one-note variety where it is hard to hear tonal differences and is bloated in the midbass.\u003c\/strong\u003e We do have to say, we needed to play around with the distance the Flex was off the nearest wall to optimize the bass. About 4” to 6” off the wall gave us the best results. When you get it dialed in, the bass impact is big and tuneful. \u003cstrong\u003eThat little 4” glass fiber woofer coupled with the dedicated amp and DSP reaches down quite low.\u003c\/strong\u003e But you do not sacrifice anything in the midrange\/midbass as voices and acoustic instruments sound very natural.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a final test, we put on some big rock and roll and cranked the volume up to the max, just to see how much room-filling sound the Flex could provide. We happened to be doing this test at home which resulted in much shouting from across the house to turn down the really loud music. In other words, Flex can rock! Bowers \u0026amp; Wilkins have done a good job of making sure even when you push the Flex to 100% there was no sign of strain or break up either. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBowers \u0026amp; Wilkins has put their DNA inside the Flex.
