For a projector that sat on your media cabinet and replaced your TV with a 120-inch picture, it was hard to beat for the price.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eThe Grand Plus is the next chapter. It's designed to replace the LS800 and move the whole concept forward with a shorter throw distance that supports up to 150 inches, an improved 4K system, HDMI 2.1 with 4K at 120Hz for gaming, Bose audio, and Google TV with Gemini built in natively.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBefore we get into the details, it's worth addressing the obvious question: why a projector instead of a big TV? TVs are getting larger and more affordable, and a good TV will still beat a projector on contrast, black levels, and peak brightness. But if you want to go really big, 120 inches or more, a UST setup is still the more practical and cost-effective way to get there. A 115-inch TV runs anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000. It needs only 6.8 inches from the lens to the wall to produce a 120-inch image. At 100 inches that drops to less than 4 inches, and at 150 inches it's 11.2 inches. Those are extremely short distances even by ultra short throw standards. Competing USTs like the Hisense PX3-PRO or the Nexigo Aurora Pro MKIII require more distance at every screen size.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eThis means it fits on a shallower piece of furniture without overhanging the front and gives you more flexibility with placement. The Grand Plus uses Epson's new 4K Display Technology, which works differently from the 4K PRO-UHD system in the LS800. Where PRO-UHD shifted pixels along one axis, the new system uses dual-axis precision shift glass plates to produce a full 3840 x 2160 image on screen. During our testing, fine detail was more resolved, textures read more clearly, and the image held up better on content with a lot of fine patterns like fabric, sports uniforms, and background detail in films.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eBrightness is rated at 4,000 lumens for both color and white output, and that balance matters more than most people realize. A lot of projectors advertise a high white lumen number but have much lower color brightness, which is what you're actually seeing during normal content. Because Epson uses three separate LCD chips — one for each primary color — the color and white lumens are equal. But on content with very heavily saturated colors, particularly deep reds, the projector can struggle to fully reproduce them as intended. But we'd strongly recommend pairing this with an ALR screen, especially if your room has overhead lighting or windows. The screen surface uses a sawtooth optical pattern that rejects ambient light from above and the sides while directing the projected image toward the viewer. That's what keeps the picture clean with the lights on. In our LS800 testing, even with overhead lights and natural light coming through the windows, colors stayed relatively vibrant and the image held up well. Sure, TVs will always have the edge when it comes to contrast, black levels, and peak brightness, especially in well-lit rooms. However, instead of the grille hiding the built-in speakers, the QS100 has removed the speaker options altogether. Normally, when a newer and more expensive model loses a feature, we’d be the first to call it out. But in this case, we actually think Epson made the right move. Almost none of our LS800 customers relied on the built-in speakers. When you're investing in a high-performance short throw projector, chances are you’re also pairing it with a dedicated sound system. It makes sense—having a massive screen to create an immersive experience only works if the audio is just as impressive. Rather than spending money on speakers most people weren’t using, Epson decided to put that budget into other improvements.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBoth of these projectors are compact enough to fit on a credenza or even inside a custom cabinet, like the ones from Salamander Designs that have cutouts specifically made for ultra short throw projectors. You can also mount them above the screen with their ELPMB75 Wall Mount. And just like the LS800, the QS100 only needs about 20 inches of depth from the wall to project a massive 120-inch image. But if you want to go even bigger, the QS100 has an edge—it can stretch the image up to 160 inches, which is ten inches larger than what the LS800 can produce.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, while you technically could project your image directly onto a wall or any basic projection screen, we highly recommend pairing either of these projectors with Epson’s SilverFlex ALR projection screen. The screen has a sleek, thin-bezel design and a dark gray surface that looks a lot like a modern flat-panel TV when turned off. The SilverFlex screen uses a special sawtooth light-rejecting optical pattern to minimize ambient light, directing the projected image toward the viewing area. If you do decide to go even bigger than 120”, we would strongly recommend you go with a high quality screen from Steward Filmscreen. Since Epson’s projectors are known for their high brightness, you don’t need a fully dark, theater-style setup to get a solid image when paired with an ALR screen. The QS100 and LS800 can deliver a vibrant picture in almost any space, even a well-lit living room, without needing to draw the curtains or turn off the lights. While a TV will still have the edge in overall brightness and color, dimming the lights or darkening the room will make the image even more striking. HDR (High Dynamic Range) was originally designed for extremely bright TVs, requiring anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 nits of light output to properly display the intended brightness and contrast levels. The challenge is that HDR content provides a single brightness spec for the entire film rather than adjusting scene by scene. You’ve probably seen budget projectors boasting high lumen counts at a much lower price, but these are often designed for commercial use. This was a request that we often heard from customers who wanted this projector to be integrated with the rest of their system and we are happy to see Epson include it with the QS100.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2 class=\"subhead margin\"\u003eISF Custom Calibration Control\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe QS100 also brings a big improvement in setup and calibration options, borrowing advanced settings from Epson’s new Q-Series projectors. It now includes ISF Custom Calibration Control, allowing for more in-depth fine-tuning if you want to get the absolute best picture quality. One of the biggest changes is the redesigned menu system, which is a huge upgrade over the LS800. While the LS800’s menu was functional, it lacked some important controls and wasn’t always the most intuitive to navigate.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe new menu is packed with options, including panel alignment adjustments and the ability to save different profiles with custom settings. We found this especially useful for switching between different lighting conditions. For example, we set up one profile in Dynamic mode with max brightness for daytime viewing with the windows open. Then, for movie nights with more light control, we used Cinema mode with brightness dialed down to 75% for better contrast and color accuracy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother benefit of this system is that the projector’s fan noise drops noticeably when brightness is set below 80%.
