It is considered by many to be the world’s best \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/headphones-portables\/headphone-amplifiers-dacs.html\"\u003eheadphone amp and DAC\u003c\/a\u003e combo. Chord recently updated their popular Hugo portable DAC\/headphone amp to the Hugo 2. The \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"\/chord-hugo-2.html\"\u003eHugo 2\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e has a battery on board so you can carry it around. Of course, this adds an extra expense to the Hugo 2, and many Chord fans after hearing the amazing Hugo 2 wanted something for the home that was just as good but at a lower cost without the portability factor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChord listened to their fans and introduced the subject of today’s review, the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"\/chord-qutest-dac.html\"\u003eChord Qutest\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. The Qutest is basically a Hugo 2 in a chassis meant to stay put, which leads to a roughly 30% cost savings over the Hugo 2.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eDesign \u0026amp; Build Quality\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs we mentioned earlier, Chord is fanatical about their build quality standards.\u003cstrong\u003e They control the entire process, with all major components manufactured in their UK factory.\u003c\/strong\u003e Like all Chord pieces, the Qutest looks and feels like a precision machine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’ve ever seen any of their products, you probably know that Chord enjoys creating unique designs for their gear. None of their pieces look like a normal audio component, and the Qutest is no exception. It’s pretty small -- around 6 ½” wide, almost 2” tall, and about 3” deep. The components come housed in a black, \u003cstrong\u003esolid machined aluminum chassis\u003c\/strong\u003e, providing great rigidity and isolation. You’ll find the same large glass circle centered on the top that we find on most Chord DACs, to indicate sample rate. The two smaller buttons on the front allow you to change the inputs and filters. More on these in a bit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe rear panel has the inputs and outputs.\u003c\/strong\u003e Digital Inputs include USB, two BNC inputs, and one Toslink. On the end, you’ll also find a mini USB connection for the external power supply. The outputs are RCAs. Our one small gripe that we also have with the Hugo 2 is that these are recessed into the chassis and some high-end analog audio cables with large RCA ends may not fit. Fans raved about the ability to tweak the sound, adding flexibility and control for the user. So it’s not surprising that they brought the same feature to the Qutest. If you have ever listened to a harsh recording from one of your favorite bands, you’ll really appreciate this feature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere’s a small button on the left that allows you to access the filters. The button changes colors for each filter, making it easy to know which one you’re on at any given time. White is for the “Incisive neutral” filter. Everything is just passing straight through, uncolored.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext is green, which Chord calls Incisive Neutral with HF roll-off. This is best used on PCM recordings that are done at a higher bit rate. The filter kicks in above 20 kHz to remove distortion that is sometimes present in the higher frequencies. Many of these frequencies are technically your range of hearing, but can still ultimately interfere with the overall sound. The orange light kicks in the “warm” filter which adds some warmth to the process. Finally, the last one is the warmth with HF roll-off. These filters are fun to play with to customize the sound, and sometimes they can make a real difference.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSince the Qutest is a home-based component, Chord included a neat feature to match its output to your system. When you first turn the Qutest on, if you press down both the input and filter buttons at the same time, you can change the output levels from 1 volt to 2 volts, to 3 volts. The 2-volt output will work best with most home audio systems, but we like having the option to move up or down as desired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe input button also changes color based on which input you choose.\u003c\/strong\u003e White is USB, yellow is BNC Coax 1, red is BNC Coax 2, and green is optical. The colors do not end there either, as Chord is all about giving you lots of info at a quick glance. In the center of the Qutest is a round glass display which we briefly mentioned earlier. This will change colors based on the sampling rate of the incoming signal, from 44.1 all the way up to DSD. There is a rainbow of 11 different colors which helps you confirm you are getting the sample rate you expected.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTo experience the ultra-high sample rates, we recommend using a computer and the USB input.\u003c\/strong\u003e However, both coax inputs are capable of handling 384kHz up to DSD128. Even the optical input will accept 192kHz up to DSD64.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs audio purists, we love the fact that you can see all of this information at a glance. For some, however, it can be a bit overwhelming. If you prefer a more tame display, you can dim the lights on the Qutest by pressing the filter and input buttons at the same time after the Qutest warms up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf it ever loses power, rest assured that it will remember all of your settings once it regains power. Considering the variety of options you can tweak to customize the Qutest, this is a must-have feature, and we’re glad they included it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe business of a unit like the Qutest is in its internal DAC (or digital-to-analog converter). The world of tech is mostly digital but our ears are still analog, so as you might imagine, DACs are used widely these days in audio components and even smartphones. The development and manufacturing of DACs have become big businesses. Many audio companies opt to buy an off-the-shelf DAC for their gear. Some even boast about the expensive chip they have in their box. Instead, Chord differentiates itself by opting out of these off-the-shelf components. Instead, \u003cstrong\u003ethey design and manufacture their own DACs from the ground up in their UK facility.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSimplicity is the name of the game in audio design. The fewer parts in the signal path, the better. The holy grail of audio design is what they call a “straight wire with gain”. Chord has taken this challenge pretty seriously -- \u003cstrong\u003ethe output stage of the \u003c\/strong\u003eQutest\u003cstrong\u003e only has five total parts in the signal path!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe supporting circuitry behind this simplicity is what really makes the Qutest magical. When Chord developed their ultra-high-performance DAC known as the DAVE (which sells for over $12,000) they came up with a processing technology called FPGA. This runs 500 times faster than competing products. It allowed them to reduce components and thus get closer to that ultimate “straight wire with gain”. Chord also uses a clocking system that is so accurate that jitter is almost non-existent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003ePerformance\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you’ve read many of our reviews, you know that we like to test gear using high-performance audio systems. They help us sniff out any flaws in the equipment we’re testing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe tested the \u003c\/strong\u003eQutest\u003cstrong\u003e with a pair of Vandersteen 5’s driven by an Ayre Acoustics stack.\u003c\/strong\u003e The first thing we noticed was that the Qutest has that classic British sound. It sounds practically identical to the Hugo 2 and also reminds us of the Naim NDX, which sells for more than three times the price of the Qutest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the world of digital, getting the timing right is extremely important. Digital signal processing breaks things down into ones and zeros, and the true magic of a good DAC is not only re-assembling the pieces but doing so without destroying the timing of how the signal came in. Done right, the music just grabs you and entrances you, making you either want to get up and dance or rummage through your music to rediscover your favorite tracks. Needless to say, \u003cstrong\u003ethe Qutest nails the timing perfectly\u003c\/strong\u003e. You get a huge soundstage, deep full bass, and effortless top end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe decided we’d push the British motif to the limit and pulled out some old Uriah Heep albums from the 70s. Some of those early tracks pretty much defined bright and harsh, but the music brought back a lot of memories. We loved the warm filter as it made this harsh recording much more pleasant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou’ll never get fatigued listening to a Chord piece. Music just flows through it. You may not want to set this up too late, or you’ll wind up listening to your favorite tracks and album until the sun comes up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll in all, it is easy to see why the Qutest is winning so many awards for the sound it produces. At roughly 15 inches wide, 12 inches deep, and 3 inches tall, it is noticeably larger than the T8. That gives it more physical presence, but it also means the two do not stack as cleanly as we hoped. Considering how many people will want to use them together, the mismatch feels like a small miss. Side by side, though, they look fantastic. The styling, finish, and lighting all line up perfectly, and it is clear Eversolo designed them to live together visually, even if the dimensions do not match.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 8.8 inch front IPS touchscreen is the main attraction. It is bright, fast, and easy to read from a few feet away, and it includes electromagnetic shielding to keep performance clean. Instead of album art, the display focuses on useful data such as input selection, clock source, filters, and real time signal information. You can choose between a spectrum view of the music playing, a set of classic VU meters, or a more technical diagnostic layout that shows channel output and processing details. It is fun to use and gives the Z10 a lively presence when the lights are low.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the left of the display is a full size headphone jack, and to the right is a large volume knob with a soft LED ring you can color match to your system. Our unit was an early pre production sample with a clear glass top that let us peek inside at the layout, which was impressively clean and organized. You get USB Audio in, dual coaxial in, dual optical in, I2S over HDMI, AES\/EBU in, and HDMI ARC and eARC for use with a TV. The I2S input supports up to 32 bit 768 kHz PCM and DSD512 and includes eight selectable pinout modes so you can match it to your transport. In our testing, we put the MDA200 DAC right beside a C22 preamp, whose knobs are identical and have the same horizontal spread. Even the height of the MDA200 equaled the exact height of the glass panel section of the C22. The Roon interface can access your digital library with crystal clarity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n\u003cp\u003eIn our testing, we learned the input codes on our C22 were the same as the factory default input remote control codes for the MDA 200. Cleverly, McIntosh allows you to assign another set of codes to work with the MDA200 Digital Audio Converter in the easy-to-use set up menu.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf you want to use the MDA200 as a DAC with your existing audio system, it will come preset with fixed output. However, it can function as a 7-input digital preamp if you go into the menu and change its audio output to be variable. Quite a few DAC’s on the market offer these two options, but a lot of them just do not have the gain to properly drive a power amp. It works, but you lose out on dynamics. McIntosh Labs gave it a very low output impedance, which means it can easily drive long cables should your power amp or amps be located at your speakers. Unlike nlike most DAC’s that top out at 2 volts RMS output, the MDA200 can put out 8 volts! You may wonder why a two-channel DAC needs 8 channels? There are two big advantages. First, if you parallel two DAC’s, you get 3 dB of improvement in signal to noise ratio. But that is just half of it. These are run in a balanced mode where there are two in one channel paralleled for the positive half of the signal and another two in parallel for the negative half. This type of balanced design greatly reduces noise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the digital signal is converted to analog, it leaves the DA2 module and passes over to the analog preamp side of the MDA200. This system is mostly used for vinyl playback, with the Cambridge providing quick access to digital music. Yes, the MDA200 is about 4 times the price of the CXN V2, but like all recent McIntosh releases we have tested, the MDA200 is just incredibly musical with rhythm and pacing you expect to hear from the best British gear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n    \u003cp\u003eOur test tracks included some of our old standards like “Lay Me Down” by Crosby Nash, “Canola Fields” by James McMurtry, “Sandman” from America, and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” from Harry Connick Jr.\u003c\/p\u003e\n  \n    \u003cp\u003e“Canola Fields” was first and we heard a huge, warm yet detailed sound stage with pacing that had our feet stomping.  The bass line was deep and impactful but also very tuneful as well.  As we played through all of these cuts, we heard dynamic contrasts exploding with an image that was on point, yet way outside the speakers and very three-dimensional.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \n    \u003cp\u003e“Sandman” is a great cut as on some systems it can sound a little edgy but with the MDA 200, it was extremely enjoyable. Each member of the ensemble stood out with some degree of distinction. Violins and tubas were warm, smooth, and present, but not immersive. Overall, the sound was easy for us to lean into.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSwitching to the Mojo 2 is where it all became a lot more interesting. Immediately, we noticed big improvements in the soundstage. \u003cstrong\u003eThe stereo image took on another dimension.\u003c\/strong\u003e New layers of immersive details with clearer dynamics made our session come alive. Dynamic details weren’t just clearer; the entire soundscape sounded more holographic and musical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome portable DACs will sound as though a light smudge has just been wiped away from a pair of prescription eyeglasses. Others will sound as though a pair of polarized sunglasses are letting you see through a slightly “tinted” lens.\u003cstrong\u003e Mojo 2 is not like hearing music through rose-colored glasses. Mojo 2 is more like a clear magnifying glass for sound that you can slip into your pocket.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWith Mojo 2, we heard a wider top-end extension and a fuller dynamic range which opened up more musical details in the presentation. It’s as though the headphones’ entire soundstage just opened up with a sense of presentation that was noticeably wider than without.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWe could hear the transient “attack” of arco strings more clearly as each violinist glided their bow up and down.\u003c\/strong\u003e We could hear more of the subtle dynamics. Each up-bow and down-bow was like hearing a string section performed live. Tubas resonated naturally with deeper and clearer low-end harmonics.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWithout Mojo 2, the tiniest dynamic details fell into the background. This made the music lose the holographic sense of presentation it had gained with the Mojo. Due to the mastering process of these early Beatles recordings, these songs make great source material for hearing a DAC’s sound signature. They serve as a great reference for testing the musical presentation of any DAC worth its salt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBecause the separation of details is already so easy to perceive and pick out of the mix, a DAC will reveal its true colors as it performs the necessary digital to analog conversion to any digital audio file. This is what we mean when we talk about a DAC having a “sound signature.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNatural harmonic details of George Harrison’s lead guitar sounded more transparent and more up-close.\u003c\/strong\u003e The guitar’s warm, smooth tone had a tuneful sense of timing that made us want to get up and move with the music.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eListening back without Mojo 2, we heard the lead guitar’s warm smooth tone, but there were fewer harmonic details. The AK4499EX and AK4191 are the newest and best-measuring chips that Asahi Kasei Microdevices has produced to date. In fact, it is the only Delta Sigma DAC circuit that requires two chips to function. The AK4191 handles the digital filtering and initial delta-sigma conversion stages. Then, the AK4499 chip does the actual digital-to-analog conversion. By separating the chips, AKM claims class-leading specs that would not be possible with one chip. The signal-to-noise stays extremely high, and the good analog characteristics of the audio output remain. The RD160 has a full set of these chips per channel, so channel separation is kept at its maximum. PCM(supports up to 32bit\/768kHz, and DSD supports up to DSD512) This allows you to take your music's digital signal and boost its sampling rate up to a full 32-bit, or even into DSD! Also, there are different digital filters with 6 different types of impulse responses. Having all of these options a front panel button away gives users who want to explore the world of oversampling the option. Another cool thing is that the front panel display will show these changes in real-time allowing users to fully see how their music is being processed by the RD160.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"hp-title\"\u003eOur Take\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe heard the RD160 at the Audio Advice Live show in a system with HiFi Rose and MoFi components and were blown away by the sound and looks of the RD160. This was backed up when our unit was hooked up in our test room and discovered its features and technology. HiFi Rose has certainly upped their game with the new RD160. This unit is extremely warm, with great bass extension and attack. The soundstage it presented was well beyond our speakers and very deep, with each instrument and musician perfectly placed. It really came to life when we tried feeding it Hi-Res Audio tracks from Qobuz or downloads from HD Tracks. The fit and finish on every part of the Hugo 2 is top notch. The \u003cstrong\u003eCNC aluminum chassis\u003c\/strong\u003e feels really nice and substantial in your hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe visual design of the Hugo 2, and really all Chord products, is interesting and unique. They have a distinct look. The main body of the unit is a rectangular shape, less than 1” tall and is 4” wide by 5” long, so it can easily fit in a briefcase or travel bag. One side has both a full-sized and mini headphone output jack. Next, you’ll find analog audio outputs, followed by a mini plug coaxial digital input and an optical input.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe end under the buttons has a mini USB input and the mini USB charging input, allowing you to charge and use the USB at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn top of the unit are 4 rounded buttons and a raised section in the center with a larger button that rolls. The\u003cstrong\u003e buttons illuminate different colors -- code for information such as power, inputs, filtering, and additional functions\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eClose to the center is a round glass window and along one side is the IR receiving window for the supplied remote control. While you can control everything from the Hugo 2’s button array when you are using it on the go, the IR remote is perfect for use at home in your music system. A 2-Volt charging adapter is included with the unit and \u003cstrong\u003eallows you to fully charge your Hugo 2 in 4 hours, providing around 7 hours of playback time\u003c\/strong\u003e. If the power button is glowing blue it means that the battery is 80%-100% charged. Green is 50-80%, orange is 20-50%, and red is 2-20%. When the Hugo is about to die, the power button flashes red.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Hugo 2 also has an impressive power management system.\u003c\/strong\u003e The easiest way to ruin a set of lithium batteries is overcharging them. After 24 hours of charging, the Hugo 2 will put itself in desktop mode where it will not use battery power. Also, when using it with no power supply plugged in, it will turn itself off after 15 minutes of inactivity, in order to conserve battery.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo select the input you want to use, simply toggle through them on the Hugo 2 by pressing the input button. The input button works similarly to the power button\/battery indicator and uses color codes for each input.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you are using the Hugo 2 as a portable headphone amp the rolling volume button follows a color scheme as well, so at a glance, you can tell where you are. It will go from black at the low end to red, yellow, green, blue, purple and finally white as you open up the volume.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhen it comes to options for shaping the sound itself, the Hugo 2 has two really unique features.\u003c\/strong\u003e The first is a set of filters that can provide some needed warmth to a harsh sounding recording. Again, the lights tell you where you are in the filter section. The sound will spread out as you go from off to max.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile all of these features can be accessed on the Hugo 2 itself, if you’re planning on using it for a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/content\/audio\/high-performance\/\"\u003ehome audio system\u003c\/a\u003e, you’ll likely find yourself using the handheld remote most of the time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Hugo 2 can handle all of the latest digital music formats.\u003c\/strong\u003e The USB port will take up to a 32-bit 768k signal as will the coaxial digital input. The optical is limited to 24 bit 192k. The Hugo also has full DSD support, and can even do DSD512. The Bluetooth input will even accept a 16-bit 48k stream. The center glass “eye” of the Hugo 2 will glow a different color depending on the incoming signal it is seeing -- 11 different colors available in all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you’ve probably gathered by now, the Hugo 2 can be a real light show. We think it’s a unique approach and have found that some customers love it while others prefer a more straightforward approach to showing your settings. Really it’s a matter of personal preference, but the supplied remote allows you to dim all of the lights if you want a more discrete look. Personally, we like having all of the information available at a glance. It takes some time to learn what everything means, but it’s relatively intuitive and once you have it down it’s like looking at the cockpit of a spaceship!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile the features we’ve discussed so far are all great, \u003cstrong\u003ethe real magic in the Hugo 2 comes with the digital wizardry taking place inside the unit.\u003c\/strong\u003e As you may know, every product that is digital must have what is called a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/what-is-a-dac\"\u003edigital-to-analog converter (DAC)\u003c\/a\u003e inside to change the digital signal into an analog signal our ears can interpret. While many other brands of DACs brag about the expensive chip they use, the Chord engineers opted instead to manufacture their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChord’s goal is to simplify the circuitry, keeping noise at an absolute minimum and allowing through all of those tiny little nuances in music that get you more involved. One way they do this is by using a \u003cstrong\u003esuper accurate clocking system\u003c\/strong\u003e that has virtually no digital jitter. It runs far faster than other systems and keeps components to a minimum. The output section has only 5 parts in the signal path, which again keeps things extremely pure. Everything is controlled by Chord’s custom \u003cstrong\u003eFPGA processor which runs 500 times faster than competing products\u003c\/strong\u003e. This technology is common across all Chord components with the quality of the parts in the signal path improving as you move up to the $25,000 DAVE DAC.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn terms of the ability to drive \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/headphones-portables\/headphones.html\"\u003eheadphones\u003c\/a\u003e, many \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/headphones-portables\/headphone-amplifiers-dacs.html\"\u003eDAC\/Headphone amps\u003c\/a\u003e have a tough time as the impedance of the headphones gets higher. \u003cstrong\u003eThe Hugo 2 can easily drive up to an 800-ohm headphone\u003c\/strong\u003e, which is pretty impressive. When paired with something like the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/fiio-x5-3rd-gen-hi-res-digital-audio-player\"\u003eFiio X5 3rd Gen\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, you get an incredibly powerful audio player. You’ll have one more piece to carry around, but this setup will provide much better sound than the player itself, especially if your library contains lots of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/videos-reviews\/lossless-vs-lossy-music-file-formats\"\u003eHi-Res audio files\u003c\/a\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo test the crossfade headphone feature, we decided to use some good acoustic recordings that weren’t subject to a great deal over overdubbing. One of our favorites for years (actually 40 years as of December 2017) has been \u003cstrong\u003eJackson Browne’s, \"Running on Empty.\" If you are a fan of folk\/rock from the 70’s and do not have this album, you should check it out.\u003c\/strong\u003e It has a selection of songs recorded on their tour bus, in various Holiday Inn hotel rooms, and live on stage. HDTracks has a Hi-Res Audio version that is just spectacular. When you push the crossfade button, as you go from light to medium to heavy, you hear the instruments move further away from your head, seemingly outside your headphones. The \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/focal-utopia-over-ear-headphones.html\"\u003eFocal Utopia\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e we used for this test was especially good at showing this off.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother cool feature of the Hugo 2 is the way it \u003cstrong\u003einterfaces with Roon\u003c\/strong\u003e. If you aren’t familiar with Roon, it’s a music library and interface that is taking the audio world by storm. Some components that are integrated with Roon allow you to play around with different digital filters. It works best on a nicer computer like a current model MacBook Pro. Using Roon via USB with the Focal Utopia’s gave us some of the best headphone sound we’ve ever experienced!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, we put the Hugo 2 into our audio system. Don’t let the Hugo 2’s small size fool you. This is a great piece to integrate into your high-resolution home audio system. \u003cstrong\u003eOur current DAC is a $6,000 Naim NDX\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.audioadvice.com\/shop-by-brand\/naim.html\"\u003eNaim\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e does digital just about as good as anybody, so we were very curious to see how the Hugo 2 would compare.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWhile the Naim did outperform the Hugo, it’s less than half the price!\u003c\/strong\u003e Like the Naim, it gets the timing right in a way that most digital pieces can’t. You know you have a winner when you veer off the typical test playlist and just start exploring your library to see how good each song will sound. It’s easy to lose time this way, and the Hugo 2 makes it fun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOur only complaint is the way Chord recessed the RCA jacks into the chassis.\u003c\/strong\u003e They obviously did this to keep the outside clean for portability, but the openings on the recessed jacks are a little too small for some of the higher-end RCA cables we like to use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen you consider all of the ways you can use the Hugo 2, along with its audio quality, we give it an A+ in all areas. It’s easy to see why the minute it was introduced it started getting 5-star ratings from audio reviewers all over the world.
